The name of Gioacchino Rossini is mainly associated with opera. In his retirement in Paris, Rossini dedicated himself to composition, writing several collections of piano pieces and a few beautiful sacred works, including Stabat Mater. The first Italian premiere took place in Bologna 3 March 1842 conducted by Gaetano Donizetti. The public declared it an immediate success and since then it has been considered among the most important works of the late Rossini.
