MONTEVERDI FESTIVAL OF VENICE 2017
For the 450th anniversary of Monteverdi’s birth, Associazione Culturale Musica Venezia, Roberta Reeder, Artistic Director, will present “Monteverdi Festival of Venice 2017” to render homage to one of the greatest composers of baroque music, in the city where the maestro di cappella lived for thirty years and where he is buried in the Frari Basilica.
The Festival will open on 3 May at 5 p.m. with the lecture “Monteverdi in Venice” at the Ateneo Veneto, where Marco Bizzarini, musicologist at the University of Padua, and collaborator at the Istituto di Studi Vivaldiani of Fondazione Cini, will discuss the relationship between the Venetian cultural ambience of the composer’s epoch and his art of composition.
Two concerts will follow, both introduced by the musicologist and composer Michele del Prete. The first, Love Songs, at the Palazzo Grimani on 6 May at 5 p.m., is entirely dedicated to the composer’s secular music and includes pieces from the Scherzi musicali and Book VII of Madrigals, with Roberta Andalò, soprano, Giovanna Bragadin, contralto, and the Ensemble Musica Venezia, which will also perform instrumental music by Marco Uccelli, Biagio Marini and Salamone Rossi.
The second, “Sacred Music,” will take place on 9 May at 8.30 p.m. at the Frari Basilica, where Monteverdi is buried, The concert includes music from Selva morale e spirituale, a collection published in 1640, and from the Mass for Four Voices and Psalms, with Roberta Andalò, soprano, Giovanna Bragadin, contralto, Claudio Zinutti, tenor, Guglielmo Buonsanti, bass, and the Ensemble Musica Venezia, which will also perform instrumental music by Dario Castello, Giovanni Battista Fontana, Andrea Gabrieli and Biagio Marini. A special feature will be Giovanna Bragadin’s performance at the first concert of the famous Arianna’s Lament from the lost opera Arianna, and at the second one, her interpretation of the contrafactum of Arianna’s Lament (the same music but with a different text), The Plaint of the Madonna, the Madonna’s lament addressed to her son Jesus, as she watches him dying on the cross.
